Theory Therapy 15: Suso Sáiz

Haunting ambient from one of Spain’s finest.

Suso Sáiz’s music and career resembles few others. Having been at the forefront of Spain’s experimental music scene since the late ‘70s, he founded, together with Maria Villa and Pedro Estevan, the experimental group Orquesta de las Nubes, releasing several albums on Madrid label Grabaciones Accidentales. Over the years, he’s made soundtracks for films, released various solo albums and worked with the likes of Javier Paixariño, Luis Eduardo Aute, Jorge Pardo, Jorge Reyes and Steve Roach.

For many though, it wasn’t until Music from Memory started reissuing and releasing Sáiz’s work that he began to garner the attention he deserved. Musically, Sáiz’s intricately crafted, visionary sound feels perfectly suited for the Amsterdam-based label, with their radiant drones, hushed melodies and haunting guitar loops.

His latest album Between No Things—a collaboration with ambient peer Suzanne Kraft—expands on a sound Sáiz has perfected over the years. The LP consists of 9 delicately woven sonic sketches whittled down from over 30 hours of raw material between Sáiz and Kraft. It’s as intimate, exploratory and exciting as anything Sáiz has done, a testament to his skills as an artist and consistently open-minded approach towards music.

Sáiz’s Theory Therapy mix, recorded at his home just outside of Madrid, follows a similar sonic tapestry. It features music from HTRK's soundtrack to Jeffrey Peixoto's Scientology documentary, plus those from K-LONE, Bing & Ruth and the excellent Home Normal label. It’s warm and inviting, hypnotic and atmospheric, contemplative and calming; in short, 60 minutes of pure bliss.

There’s no accompanying chat for this one, but Sáiz’s mix more than speaks for itself. Press play to listen and keep scrolling for the full tracklist.
