Reflective selections inspired by a recent move to New York City.
This one seems like a pretty perfect way to close out the year. It’s a mix by Russian-born selector Leonid Treskunov and it was recorded just before he relocated from Moscow to New York City.
There are so many incredible tracks in this recording it’s impossible to neatly summarise how beautiful it is. “I guess this mix is about the journey itself no matter what obstacle is in front and finding balance and optimism in any given time and moment,” Leonid tells me during our chat a few months ago.
Thanks to Leonid for sharing the mix with us. We hope you enjoy it too. Happy holidays and thank you for all the support in 2021. See you next year.
How are you today?
I'm good! I just relocated to New York City a couple of months ago. It's a bit overwhelming at times but I'm really enjoying it and feel very lucky to be here. Also very excited to witness my first autumn here.
Can you tell us a little bit about the mix? What were you feeling when you made it?
The mix was done before my relocation. I didn't know at that time that I would actually manage to move with all the uncertainty worldwide but I guess this mix is about the journey itself no matter what obstacle is in front and finding balance and optimism in any given time and moment.
Where did you record the mix?
The mix was recorded in Moscow where I'm originally from.
Where would you recommend listening to it?
I personally prefer listening to music (and mixes especially) while strolling somewhere. Cannot recommend a specific place but rather recommend not being in a hurry while walking somewhere in a tranquil setting preferably with water somewhere in proximity.
Are there any tracks you’ve used in the mix that are special or significant to you?
Every track in this mix is meaningful to me but I'd love to highlight Misha Sultan's track from his album The Red Fern Road. Highly recommend listening to the album if you haven't. And I love the one I end with from David Lynch's Straight Story soundtrack. Love this movie and the soundtrack—always a huge inspiration.
Theory Therapy mixes are about sharing the music that you personally find therapeutic and restorative. What does that mean for you?
Means a lot to me. Music has always been a healing companion of mine and a source of rejuvenation and contemplation. At some point I noticed how certain mixes turned out to be very therapeutic and helped me in my therapy with whatever I was going through and facing at the moment. Compiling and recording a mix is whole experience in itself and it's always interesting to see what story is formed in the end when all is done.
Is there a particular album or piece of music that you find yourself returning to for tranquillity?
I think Yoshio Ojima's Une Collection Des Chaînons is something I can always return to for that and never seem to get tired of. Pretty much all of Grouper and Virginia Astley's From Gardens Where We Feel Secure and Maiden Newton Ecliptic.
What do you have planned until the end of the year?
There's a lot to do. I have exams towards the end of the year (since I'm back at uni for a couple of years) and a lot of work outside of university. Hopefully I will finish a couple of mixes along the way as well.
